We’ve all been there when we’re working with clients that are not exactly perfect for us. But why? Why are we attracting clients of this nature?
You first need to work out who is the perfect-for-you client. The client will allow you to do your best work, serve at your highest level, and have a freaking good time while doing so. This is the type of client who will energize you when you work with them, rather than drain you. These are the clients who will benefit from your service most, and who will become your brand ambassadors, recommending many other clients to you.
Step 1) Grab a piece of paper and create your Five Star Client Policy.
Divide it into two columns. In the first column, write down all the qualities of the clients that you will not accept when you recognize them. An example might be as follows:
My five-star soul-client will not:
- Have a victim mentality (operate from To Me Consciousness by default)
- Pay late or be a non-payer
- Be closed to constructive feedback
- Be dishonest with me or other people
- Cancel sessions or show up late for appointments
- Make constant excuses as to why they didn’t follow up on their commitments to themselves
Don’t hold back. Make a comprehensive list of potential qualities that may make your work less enjoyable, or jeopardise your client’s results.
Step 2) In the second column, write down the opposite of the qualities you defined in the first column. Examples might include the following:
My five-star soul client will:
- Have a great deal of personal responsibility
- Always pay on time
- Be highly coachable and open to constructive feedback
- Be honest with me and everyone else
- Always show up on time, except for very rare emergencies
- Follow up on their commitments
Step 3) Review the left column of your five star client policy and ask yourself, ‘Am I practicing any of these qualities in any area of my life?’
For example, if you expect your ideal next-level clients to pay on time, every time, you had better make sure you practice the same: and not only in regards to your business responsibilities but also in relation to your household bills and financial responsibilities in every area of your life.
If you notice any gaps or opportunities for improvement on your part, set a plan and make commitments to eliminate this pattern from your life. Review the entire list of qualities you won’t accept in your next level clients, and make sure you have a plan for not embodying these qualities anywhere in your life.
Step 4) Move onto column two of the five star client exercise and ask yourself, ‘Am I this woman, in every area of my life? If not, what am I going to do about it?’
For example, if one of the expectations of your clients is: ‘They always follow up on their commitments to themselves’, then make sure you do exactly the same: again, not only in business but in every other area of your life.
This exercise can be a hard pill to swallow. The truth of the matter is, in order to attract our highest–level clients, we must be living at our highest–level and mastering the most powerful resource that you have – YOU.
